... then I saw it had the DCT; enthusiasm killed. I didn't give it another look after that.
It did make me appreciate the e39 M5 I spent last weekend in even more. That's something positive about this M5, right?

It's an ///M5; it's all positive.

I guess you'd be similarly disappointed with my 135is DCT. But the DCT is one of the main reasons I got my car. I drove nothing but stick shift for 12 years before getting it.

That's cold.
Looking.

As much as a like manual, I don't fault anyone who's enough of a car person to drive a phenomenal performance sedan like an M5, even with DCT. I wouldn't have one myself, but if BMW were limited to selling M5s to people who like manuals, we might not get them at all.
That said, I hate performance oriented cars that only offer 2 pedal options (I am looking hard at you, Ferrari an Maserati, you dream-killers).

Not exactly. I get that some people prefer the DCT, and it does it's job very well. A DCT is perfectly fine as an option on most cars. However, after getting an opportunity to experience and drive an M5 with a 6-speed, it just seems wrong to get an M5 without a stick.

It was 2 F this morning. This Maserati looked a bit cold, too.

The M5 was almost a 2 pedal only vehicle. The only reason the last two generations of M5s were/are available with manuals was because of complaints from America.
I understand that DCTs have a place, and a good option. However, I will always respect the driver with the manual more than the one without.

Some M5s are more "all positive" than others.

I love my 6MT more than anything in my M3, and I loved the 6MT in my 335 before that. I would never trade that third pedal for a DCT in a 3 series or smaller car.
HOWEVER - the F10 M5 is big. Not just big, huge. There's something about a car that size that makes me say to myself "Ok, buddy, this car isn't light, isn't nimble, isn't ever going to be a race car...it's a massive sedan with a lot of muscle. What are you gaining by wanting to shift an F10 M5 yourself? Anything, Joey Hand? No? I didn't think so." ...and then I'd have it in DCT, which is a fantastic gearbox.

I too lose all interest in a vehicle that has a superior, modern, ridiculously fast shifting transmission.
Not.

I like to feel like I accomplished something when driving a performance vehicle. Pushing buttons doesn't really do it for me.

I have a special place in my heart for big fast manual sedans...

If you mean the E39 M5 or its ilk (including many previous Alpina iterations), I agree completely. The E60 is when it went over the edge for me, and, even though I absolutely love the E60 M5, I understand why it was designed for the SMG II gearbox. The new cars, whether we like it or not, are an extension of that engineering approach. As you know, if the US market didn't still clamor for a 6MT option in the bigger M cars, it wouldn't exist.
I'm not saying my own thoughts are well sorted out on this point. I HATE that the new GT3 is PDK-only...but if the M5 in its current size went that way, it wouldn't bother me one bit.
